Zambia a stunning country which possesses a tremendous diversity of areas, landscapes and experiences. It is rightly famous, of course, for hosting Victoria Falls a sight no less spectacular for its global fame. Kafue National Park is a storied, remote reserve in the west that incorporates savannah floodplains and verdant woodlands, home to cheetah, lions, African wild dog, plentiful elephant and hippo, and some truly remarkable birdlife.
Meanwhile, Kasanka National Park packs an incredible range of both flora and fauna into its relatively small space, including some relatively unique offerings such as the annual flocking of millions of fruit bats, the blue monkey, sitatunga antelope and marsh mongoose. The capital, Lusaka, is also well worth a visit, a high-altitude and relatively young city, fast-growing and marvellously chaotic, the real Zambia.
Accommodation in Zambia is varied and excellent. There is a cornucopia of safari camps – from the traditional canvas safari sort to more unique examples such as Mchenja Camp on the banks of the Luangwe – as well as some unforgettable safari lodges including Chichele Presidential Lodge, a true one-off. Luxury hotels include the Royal Livingstone, and though there are no resorts proper, as the likes of Sindabezi more than makes up the lack, a tiny luxury lodge set on its own private island.
One activity for which Zambia is particularly famous is its walking safaris. Many of our itineraries are tailored to suit individuals and groups. While the falls offer some pretty hair-raising experiences, it must be said that more sedate ones are available as well, including cruises and canoeing. Visitors to Kafue can enjoy a wonderful mix of foot safari and water-based activities like fishing. And the aforementioned fruit bat migration has to be seen to be believed.
