Jill Crawshaw tells of her time in Vamizi Island, outlining its history and those responsible for the community and conservation-oriented foundations that it’s built on.

In 1998, on visiting Vamizi Island off the coast of Mozambique Christopher Cox and Julie Garnier fell in love with Vamizi Island and in 2005 built Luxury lodge Vamizi as a means by which to provide work for the islanders – among the poorest people in the world – and to preserve the biodiversity on and around the island. All the materials of Vamizi Island Lodge are locally sourced – including the marble bathtubs – and everything strives to better the environment that it’s in.
