Orkeju Camp

Located on a private 750,000-acre concession in Maasailand, in northern Tanzania, Orkeju Camp is an expertly run luxury bush camp.

Overview

Situated in an acacia grove on a riverbank with views of Kitumbeine Mountain in the distance, Orkeju Camp comprises six sleeping tents and a shared area. A large mess tent, the shared area consists of a lounge with plush armchairs arranged around a coffee table, a long dining table, and a bar. The décor is very much traditional safari – canvas, local rugs and throws, wicker-style floors – enlivened by touches of luxury in the stylish table-settings and lighting. A fire pit sits on the riverbank where guests can enjoy sundowners and post-safari conversation in the evenings. A simple, classic, no-frills set-up, it has everything you need, and nothing you don’t. A proper bush camp.

Food and service

Whether taken at the dining table, outdoors on the sand lugga, or out on safari, meals at Orkeju Camp are home-cooked, simple, and delicious. The team has been together since well before the founding of the camp, the service is efficient, friendly, and attentive, and the guiding is on an altogether different level. Make no mistake: Orkeju’s the real McCoy.

Rooms

Orkeju Camp’s six safari tents are arranged on the banks of the river in such a way as to guarantee privacy and striking views. Each ensuite room has hot and cold running water, either a king-sized or twin bed, and a spacious veranda. The tents are roomy with high canvas roofs, plenty of space for hanging clothes, and a mixture of traditional and colonial-style furnishings, including a wooden trunk, bedside table, and writing desk. Marvellously appointed.

Activities

Activities available at Orkeju Camp include wildlife drives, walks, and tracking, quad biking, village visits, e-bike bush rides, a hike up Ol Donyo Lengai, helicopter excursions, and fly camping, some of which involve supplementary fees and pre-booking. If you’re travelling with children and they get the chance, then the opportunity to make walking staffs using traditional Maasai techniques is not to be missed.
