Camp Hwange offers access to a private concession in the north-western reaches of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. Very much a traditional bush safari camp, while it is certainly comfortable, welcoming, and not without luxurious touches, the real draw here is beyond doubt the quality of the guiding that emphasises walking and tracking.
Overview
Lying between mopane woodlands to the north and sandy soil teak forests to the south-west, Camp Hwange has the feel of a luxurious long-house: vaulted thatch ceilings and open sides to afford full access to the open savannah, plush rugs and leather sofas and armchairs, lamps for atmosphere and a long group dining table. Outside, there is a fire pit with camp chairs for evening gatherings and coffee in the morning.
Food & service
Meals are taken as a group at Camp Hwange, including guides and managers, adding to the sense of a communal experience. A cold buffet breakfast is served early morning, unless prior arrangements have been made, to allow for early safari starts. Lunch is usually another buffet of salads and lighter dishes. Dinner is a three-course affair of richer, usually traditional European cuisine.
Rooms
Camp Hwange comprises eight thatched canvas-walled en-suite rooms, accommodating 18 guests overall. Furnishings have been kept simple but appealing – comfortable double or twin beds, a writing desk and chairs, rugs for the floor, a sofa – and large windows and a ceiling fan help with ventilation to keep things comfortable even during the hotter months. Facilities are ensuite and feature a shower and washbasin with a range of quality toiletries, and a separate flush toilet. The rooms all overlook a nearby natural waterhole.
Activities
The range of activities and the quality of the guiding are what make Camp Hwange exceptional. Founded by David Carson, the team here is recognised as some of, if not, the best guides in all of Zimbabwe, and whether exploring by foot on a walking safari or roaming further afield on a 4×4 game drive, guests here experience some of the most spectacular wildlife the country has to offer, including elephant, hippo, giraffe, lion, cheetah, pangolin, and a huge range of avian species.
