Little Oliver’s Camp is located in the south of Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park. A luxury tented set-up operated by the team behind the larger Oliver’s Camp nearby, it offers a more intimate version of that popular option.
Overview
Like Oliver’s, the feel of Little Oliver’s Camp strikes a balance between the luxury and the rustic. It centres round a large open-sided thatched enclosure that houses a lounge area (a very welcoming space with comfortable furniture and tables scattered with books) and a communal dining room.
The décor is refined yet relaxed throughout, emphasising local woods and crafts, and there is a large deck for sundowners and wildlife-watching. In keeping with the feeling of authentic remoteness, internet is for office-use only, and phone-use is discouraged in the communal areas.
Food & service
The menu at Little Over’s Camp is a deluxe affair. Often singled-out for particular praise, the cuisine is contemporary European with touches of African tradition, and can be adapted for special dietary requirements. Continental and cooked breakfasts are available, and there is a two-course buffet lunch and three-course dinner. The drinks list is extensive. The service is thoughtful and friendly, and there are live-in guides.
Rooms
There are five tents at Little Oliver’s Camp, making it approximately half the size of its sister camp. Each sits on a slightly raised platform, with canvas sides and a thatch roof, and all have a furnished deck (a real plus, since wildlife can often be seen from the camp itself). All are en suite, with indoor and outdoor showers, and there is one tent at a slight remove ideal for honeymooners. There is a strong local feel in all tents: bead lampshades, bedside tables fashioned from reclaimed tree-trunks, sturdy wooden beds.
Activities
Known for its large herds of elephant, Tarangire National Park offers outstanding wildlife drives and hiking opportunities. Fly camping from Little Oliver’s Camp is also highly recommended.
