Famous for is rock-hewn churches among which lies the largest monolithic church in the world, Lalibela is said to be the home of the ark of the covenant, which was supposedly brought here in 1,000 BC by King Soloman and the queen of Sheba’s son, Menelik. Jakki tells of her time dancing the night away with locals and embarking on an ‘Ethiopian massage’, her guide’s name for three hours spent driving across bone-shaking terrain and ending up in Bale Mountains where she was to encounter the rarest canid in the world – the Ethiopian wolf.
