‘If it doesn’t have the support of the people, it is doomed to fail.’
– Michael Werikher, conservationist
Truly sustainable travel is part of a holistic solution to a problem that left unchecked could result in having to restock our wildernesses in less than 10 years time. It’s a solution designed to tackle poverty, protect communities, and effect cultural change only where absolutely necessary.
For us, ensuring that we have the greatest impact has meant Journeys by Design creating its own Africa House Group, which houses its charitable and social enterprise arms Wild Philanthropy and Tekula Capital alongside its travel operations. It has meant raising over US$ 6 million for charities through the auctioning of safaris, as well as investing US$ 600,000 in on-the-ground eco-business Wild Expeditions Ethiopia. And it has meant setting up the African Tourism Crisis Fund, which seeks to protect Covid-affected jobs in on-the-ground community-owned tourist businesses.
