Probably the quintessential safari experience – a private mobile tented camp.
Although you are living under canvas, this is not your average camping experience. All tents have en-suite bathrooms and private verandahs; there is a main mess tent for all meals, ice for your gin and tonics; and private guides and vehicles to round off a truly exclusive safari style.
These camps involve a huge amount of logistical preparation. The result is that the fewer you are, the more expensive it becomes on a per person basis. Traditionally, these camps would be booked by groups, families and combinations of families, looking for the ultimate, money-no-object safari indulgence.
The tents, of which there are usually a maximum of 4, are well-equipped walk-in tents, with two cot beds, and a bathroom tent attached to the rear with short drop toilet and bucket shower. There is a separate dining tent with fully stocked bar, and staff on hand. As well as a fully-stocked complimentary bar with a selection of spirits, wines, beers and ice, there is a small reference library of African books and a variety of games. There is a campfire every evening.
Due to the light weight mobility of these camps you are able to access remote areas far from the mini-van routes. Then, using your camp as a base, you strike out in search of the game and an Africa all to yourself. In the evenings, it’s just your group out in the wilderness, enjoying the camp, the food and service.
If you go to Africa we feel its very much worth you sleeping under canvas at least once in order to properly experience the essence of a true safari.
