Located in the highlands of Selous Game Park, away from the Rufiji River and latest addition to the award winning Beho Beho Safari Camp, Bailey’s Banda offers the best of two very fine worlds: a private house with access to all the amenities of a lodge that epitomises everything that is good about sustainable tourism.
Open as of June 2012, situated above Beho Beho’s other bandas, a stone and palm leaf thatch two storey build, Bailey’s Banda – called so after Christopher Bailey, Beho Beho’s owner – consists of main house and two sleeping rooms. Open plan, the borders between in and out deliberately blurred, the main house includes a lounge and dining area, bar, kitchen, pool and viewing deck. Characterised by stone floors, found wood trims and a mix of white and dry brick walls, the shared areas – much like the main camp – aim to combine a chic pioneer look with elements that in make and design are typically Tanzanian: a pale three piece suite, a clutch of art deco(ish) drawings, an ancient looking trunk, old leather arm chairs, a Zanzibari lounger, the odd piece of ebony sculpture. Airy, spacious, restrained, the overall look is cool, welcoming and utterly private.
Bailey’s Banda comes with its own dedicated team, including a chef, house manager and guide. The service is exceptional, as is the food, be it brunch, a picnic or dinner. Meals are served inside, at the dining table, and outside, on the veranda or during game drives. Versatile, experienced and relaxed, the service at Bailey’s is about privacy, surprise and authenticity – lamp-lit dinners, lakeside breakfasts, unexpected starters, rare wines… It really is that good. Please be advised that the chef will cater to special diets.
Equally fine, the bedrooms at Bailey’s Banda come with giant double beds, their own bathroom, outdoor showers and a balcony or veranda. Comfortable, huge and, like the main house, possessing a colour scheme – whites, beiges and tawny browns – designed to create the impression of light and space, each includes a writing desk, plenty of seating, a standalone bath and a pared down, non-electronic selection of luxurious amenities.
With an emphasis placed on guests helping plan daily itineraries, activities at Bailey’s Banda are designed to suit individual needs, and include guided walks, bird watching, game drives (in a dedicated specially designed open-sided vehicles) and boat trips. Guests may also, should they wish, make use of the main camp’s amenities. Please note that, given the banda’s position, Bailey’s welcomes children of 12 and above. This said, Beho Beho is flexible, and is happy to assess each situation on an individual basis.
