PLEASE NOTE: Phantom Forest is temporarily closed due to a fire in the Knysna area. We apologise for any inconvenience. In the meantime, we suggest considering Emily Moon River Lodge as an alternative accommodation.
Recipient of World Travel Awards’ Leading Green Hotel Africa 2010, located on the Knysna river, in the 137 hectare Phantom Forest Eco Reserve, Phantom Forest Lodge is an outstanding luxury lodge.
Aiming to ‘touch the earth lightly’, everything about Phantom Forest is conditioned by its understanding of the environment. Constructed entirely of sustainable materials and built around and into the natural vegetation, not a single tree was cut down in its production. Everything is recycled, including the water. A wood and thatch build, the lodge consists of a main lodge and 14 tree suites. The shared areas include a lounge/bar, the Chutzpah and Forest Boma restaurants and 2 pools. Inspired by Moroccan interiors, the lounge is characterised by bright colours, bench seating and long low tables.
FOOD AND SERVICE
The food, also influenced by North African cuisines, is served either at the Boma, a 6 course table d’hote, or at the Chutzpah, a 5 course platter affair.
Elevated, linked by a series of wooden walkways, the sleeping accommodation of Phantom Forest is spread across 2 sub-sites: Tree Camp and Upper Tree Camp. The 6 original or Classic suites constitute Tree Camp. The 4 Upper Camp suites and the 2 Moroccan suites are located on the newer site. Each of the Classic rooms include a bed, lounge, veranda, en suite bathroom and outdoor showering facilities. The Upper Camp suites are similar, only bigger, and come with jacuzzis. Ditto the Moroccan suites, which differ only in that they are decorated with North African silks and cushions. Comfortable, spacious, beautiful, the rooms are a delight.
Activities at Phantom Forest include guided walks, canoeing, bird watching, sailing, golf, bungee jumping, mountain biking and educational trips.
