Imagine a glorious English country house with roaring fireplaces and old-style elegance and you’ll get a good idea of the pleasures of a stay at the award-winning Hunter’s Country House.
Located around 10km from Plettenberg Bay, this family-owned hotel, once a homestead called Pear Tree Farm, is now part of the Relais & Chateaux portfolio of properties. Set in 5 hectares of magnificent, manicured gardens, it consists of a fine manor house and 21 thatched cottage suites.
In secluded locations dotted around the estate, the variety of accommodation on offer includes 8 Garden Cottages (approximately 45 square meters in size), each individually decorated, each complete with fireplace, air con, en suite bathroom and a garden patio ideal for al fresco meals and bird and butterfly spotting. Two Garden or Family Suites come with identical facilities, but are twice the size of the Garden Cottages and feature a parents’ bedroom, a family room with dining table, 2 bathrooms, a sofa bed (enough for one child) and room in the suite for a single bed or cot for a second youngster.
There are 5 Premier Suites measuring 60 square metres, which are a roomier option for 2 people and come with the added pleasures of a large patio with sun loungers and umbrellas. Additionally, two Classic Suites offer a separate lounge and dining area to the ample bedrooms, while French windows open out onto a private stone patio, sundeck, plunge pool and garden area. Top of the range is the Forest Suite. Covering 125 square metres, there is a butler’s kitchen, guest restroom, 2 fireplaces, split level dining room and large lounge with home entertainment system. A fine en-suite bedroom, complete with a four poster bed, leads out onto a private pool and garden area.
The main house features a large outdoor pool area for all guests of Hunter’s Country House to enjoy and three separate eating areas (all serving excellent food), including an elegant candle-lit room for romantic fine dining, a conservatory for breakfasts and an outdoor summer house, which is particularly popular with families.
While lazing in the gardens is a pleasure in itself, if you are feeling more energetic there’s plenty on offer. As well as a Cubs Corner (kids club) on site, and a fine beach just 10-15 minutes drive away, guests can get busy with bird watching, hiking forest trails, horse riding, deep sea fishing, sailing, canoeing, mountain biking, scuba diving, train tripping, swimming, surfing and – in the right season – whale and dolphin watching.
