Opened in April 2018 and located close to the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Kuthengo Camp is an intimate and welcoming bush camp.
Four modern en-suite safari tents constitute the camp’s hub, alongside the lounge and dining area which lie under two separate tents. The lounge, filled with comfortable sofas and charming wooden coffee tables, is a great spot to recharge and exchange notes with other guests. The camp’s close proximity to the Shire River – guests arrive via boat – lends itself to a truly excellent selection of wildlife and bird viewing. Please note, however, that there is no Wi-Fi available at Kuthengo.
Food & service
In keeping with the camp’s small nature, the service is personable and tailored to the specific needs of guests. The food is hearty, wholesome fare, and dinner under the stars is a must.
The safari tents (two twin, one king, one family) are spacious and include a bath and outdoor showers. The views from the safari tents, which have their own wooden veranda and deck chairs, are truly astounding, and guests regularly report hearing wildlife grazing outside at night. The bathrooms are characterised by shades of oak and cream, and flickering candles placed by the sinks exemplify little touches of thoughtfulness across the camp.
Activities include day and night wildlife drives, walking safaris and boat cruises along the beautiful Shire River. Expect to see elephants, buffalo, zebra, and a range of colourful birds. The whole drive experience – from the vehicles to the rangers – really is impressive.
The beds are cooled by an eco-friendly evening breeze air conditioning system and the camp runs off solar generated power.
