Loisaba Tented Camp, part of the well-regarded Elewana collection, offers luxurious and thoughtful accommodation. The real draw here, however, is the commanding views over the Laikipia plains.
Overview
Recently rebuilt from the ground up, Loisaba combines the traditional and the contemporary. The communal areas include an open-air dining area, a lounge and bar, a large deck, and an infinity pool. Wooden floors, traditional thatch, and furnishings that give a Kenyan spin to European classics provide the perfect setting from which to savour the views, which extend all the way to Mt Kenya. Nearer by is a watering-hole that attracts elephant, giraffes and a diverse range of other wildlife.
Food & service
The cuisine at Loisaba rarely goes unmentioned by guests. With all food freshly prepared by chef Christine and her team, menus can be tailored to fit any dietary requirement (vegetarians are effusive in their praise). The fare is stylish without being fussy, incorporating local produce into a thoroughly contemporary offering. Service is attentive and friendly.
Rooms
There are six en suite tents (three doubles, three that convert between double and twin) all including a veranda with extensive views and a bathroom with a shower, flush toilet and double-basin vanity. There are also three Family Combinations.
Each of these comprises of a double tent and another that can be converted between double and twin; the two are joined by a walkway and have all the amenities offered by the en suites. A second infinity pool is shared exclusively by one en suite tent and one Family Combination. The style throughout has been referred to as ‘like something out of Architectural Digest’, and that pretty well sums it up: modern comfort with a stylish twist, all underpinned by a striking local aesthetic.
Activities
Loisaba is one of Africa’s great destinations, and there are any number of ways to experience it – wildlife drives, hiking and camel safaris to name only a few.
Impact
Conservation
Beyond reinvesting profits back into conversation programmes, Loisaba Tented Camp has partnered with Mpala, Space for Giants, Lion Landscapes and San Diego Zoo Global among others to collaborate on ground-breaking research. Guests are encouraged to contribute to the data collection during wildlife drives by using SMART (Species Monitoring And Reporting Tool) software and monitoring sightings.
Commerce
Loisaba Tented Camp is almost entirely powered by solar panels, allowing visitors to enjoy luxurious surroundings whilst retaining a low eco-footprint. Food waste is composted, and all waste-water is treated before being released back into the wild.
Community
Loisaba supports numerous community projects, and ensures that the preservation of local cultures is at the forefront of the company’s ethos.
