Last month, a guest of Journeys by Design named Alejandro, 11 years old and adventurer by trade, was good enough to answer some interview questions after the family’s time in Botswana’s Kalahari and Okavango Delta, which I post below.
Who was your favourite guide / member of staff and why?
Roger. He was witty, cheerful, helpful and always full of information.
Did you see much wildlife and if so, what was your favourite and why?
We saw a lot of wildlife (mostly near the Okavango Delta), but one thing that I found particularly special was the pack of wild dog. This was my first time seeing them and watching their hunting strategy was interesting.
What was the most interesting thing you learnt?
I found out that elephants don’t completely digest the marula fruits and swallow it whole. It was also fun learning what marulas taste like.
What surprised you the most?
I was very surprised and ecstatic when a meerkat ran up to me and jumped on my head.
What was your most memorable day / moment?
I remember seeing a lion pride, an elephant carcass and even a leopard all on the same day.
What would you change if you went again?
Next time, I’m bringing a fly swatter. There is a plague of flies (not Tsetse) that irritate you at every corner.
Was there anything else that made the trip special / funny / strange / wild / wonderful?
The wildlife wasn’t just on the drive, it was all around you! Kudu on the trail, a monitor lizard next to the tent and even a ‘little’ tree mouse that liked dropping in.
Any other points or anecdotes you’d like to add?
If you’re a gastronomist like me, don’t worry. Food is always FIVE STARS! Another bit of information: if it gets too hot, you can cool down in a swimming pool (if there is one) or have a chilled drink.
