Set in the heart of Kaokoland, one of the most remote parts of Namibia, Hoanib Valley Camp is a joint venture between the local Himba community and Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
Overview
Situated at the bottom of a desert valley with views the surrounding desert landscape, Hoanib Valley Camp is canvas and wood build, and consists of six sleeping tents and a mess tent. The shared area includes a couple of lounge areas, a library, a dining area, bar and deck, and a lounge area in front of the lodge with a fire pit for evening sun-downers. In terms of look and feel, the camp blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape. Wi-Fi is available
Rooms
The six tents at Hoanib Valley Camp include five double rooms and a family suite, all of which follow the design of the main area. Each room comes with a king size bed and en suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers and king size beds. Please note that there is access to electricity in all tents. A daily laundry service is available.
Activities
Aside from rhino tracking on foot and wildlife drives to track the elephant, giraffe and the elusive desert lion, activities include visits to the field base of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and to local Herero settlements.
Impact
Conservation
The lodge is a joint venture between the local community and Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which means it has a direct positive impact on the local eco-system, both from a community and conservation perspective. GCF’s research expands beyond the desert-adapted giraffe which call the region home; they also monitor elephant and general wildlife.
Commerce
Natural Selection donates 1.5% of their gross revenue to conservation, and the GCF is one of the partners who receives funds from this generosity.
Community
The local communities are always consulted before major decisions are made in the region.
