Located just outside Livingstone, in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, south Zambia, within a stone’s throw distance of the Zambezi River, Thorntree River Lodge is a fine modern tented lodge.
Overview
A tented thatch and the newest property in the African Bush Camps portfolio, Thorntree River Lodge consists of 8 twin rooms and 2 family units (which have 4 beds each), a library, gym, spa, floating wooden decking, private plunge pools and an open dining area – complete with its own wine cellar. While an emphasis is placed on privacy – making the lodge an ideal choice for honeymoons and romantic escapes – the shared spaces are also well appointed: the sofas and chairs are a mix of soft blue tones, complimented by hanging lights and well-chosen wooden bookstands.
Food & service
The food – African cuisine – can be served either in the open dining area or on the floating decking, located besides the river bank. The service, across the entire lodge, is faultless, with staff happy to assist guests wherever possible.
Rooms
Characterised by sliding glass doors, which lead directly out onto guests’ private deckchair clad decking and private plunge pool, and limited furniture – the occasional chair and tasteful canvas – the bedrooms are airy, comfortable and in touch with the nature that surrounds them.
The bathrooms – both indoor and outdoor showers and flush toilets, the décor firmly wood orientated – are equally fine. Internet access and a television are available in the library.
Activities
The lodge’s activities centre around the local wildlife that populate the river. Alongside spa treatments and the gym, activities at Thorntree River Lodge include wildlife walks, cruises, fishing trips, excursions to nearby villages and the Livingstone Museum and guided tours of Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
