If you like the idea of getting a little further under the skin of Ethiopia, then you cannot hope to do it any better than on a walking tour in either the Lalibela area or the Tigray mountains north of Mekele. The community-supported walks combine local tukuls (houses) built by communities for visiting guests, and now include over ten separate village projects that have signed up to the community programme which is run by an indigenous NGO. The walks take in some stunning cultural scenes and are best enjoyed over at least 2 or 3 nights.
Accommodation is spartan but acceptable, where one trades the conveniences of modern life for the experience of travelling back in time, through remote rural Ethiopia.
The itinerary will combine time in the rock churches of Lalibela, the castles of Gondar and the island monasteries at Bahir Dar. In terms of providing support and flexibility, your trek will come with its own private vehicle and guide.
